Artist statement
In these paintings a patterned network derived from the tessellation and distortion of a single motif provides a ground for the interpretation and hence revelation of pictorial possibilities. Biformation, juxtaposition, sequencing and symmetry are all points of emphasis and are indicative of a striving to explore the nature of phenomena, whilst also engaging in dialogues with past art.
Paint is applied unconventionally in easily discernable, distinct, overlapping layers clearly revealing the order in which it was applied. This acknowledgement of paints physical properties, coupled with the claustrophobic appearance of each composition, facilitates a tension between the tactile and the illusory. Each work, whilst being presented as a flat object threatens to occupy both the implied space within its own boundaries and the literal space also occupied by the viewer.
