Artist Statement
Visual art may provide both a cerebral and a physical experience for the viewer. The paintings in this exhibition emphasize spatial possibilities, flatness and movement. The depiction of space in a painting is illusory and, therefore a cerebral construct. In contrast however, flatness and movement engage the viewer in physically oriented processes, for example the tangible surface of a painting is in essence flat and the eye physically follows the path of a line hence encouraging movement. But, operations within these works are not clearly formularized; they are veiled in order to promote an atmosphere of ambiguity and painterly struggle. The large scale environmental works offer opportunities to explore a very direct physical dialogue; however the miniature works deny physical influence and are consequently more cerebral intimate works.
