Synesthesia: Artist statement
There are four works in Synesthesia; each one is mural sized in scale. This meant I could develop new images which were an advance on the micro/macro component which had featured in my work for a number of years. One motif is presented in various positions and distortions. This is constructed entirely of tiny linear versions of itself. Screen printing was utilized in order to attain a level of detail not otherwise possible using conventional painting methods. The images are not totally mechanical in paint application, as evidence of the artist’s hand is still present in the surface. In some works up to seven screen printed layers were applied. These were offset in order to show layers underneath and facilitate a vibratory spatial sensation (see the slide details). Metallic colours were incorporated to enliven the surface. These are immersive paintings which emphasise sensory perception through the experience of looking. One becomes aware of one’s own body in comparison to their size and presence, and consequently our own position in relation to how we structure and perceive the world is scrutinized. Symmetrical compositions allude to hypnotic sensations and underlying forms of psychological control.
