Artist Statement
These paintings demonstrate my interest in the development of a specific visual language. Often evident within this language is a direct relationship between organic and hard-edged forms. This duality has been a popular subject for many painters during the twentieth century and it has evolved into what most would consider a universal issue across many disciplines.
A heavily worked and textured impasto surface is apparent. This has been achieved via the use of a variety of different painting tools. The worked surface adds a physical, earthbound presence to the geometrical compositions. Physical qualities are also present in the direct nature of the mark making and in the size of some shapes, i.e. they are almost ‘arms length’ and hence reflect the artist’s body.
Over painting also adds to the textured surfaces but in turn reveals previous under painting via small openings between painterly surfaces. Visual weight is distributed evenly over a flat plane in order to create a balanced often centric composition.
